Hi Citylife,
Here is your weekly email to keep you up to date with everything happening in the life of our church.

We celebrated Good Friday bright and early at Stuart Park. It was a great morning worshipping, hearing about the story of Jesus, and sharing communion together. Thanks to everyone who came along, it is a well-loved Citylife tradition!

SUNDAY MESSAGE SUMMARY

The Good News of Easter - Part 2: Something Better is Here
Adrian Thornton

Last week, I kicked off this Easter series by talking about Jesus’ first miracle—turning water into wine—and how it wasn’t just a random miracle. Instead, it was a sign pointing to something greater that Jesus was about to do.

The Easter Sunday message is about looking at the greater thing that Jesus came to do, which was the ending of the old covenant and the ushering in of the new. Interestingly, He revealed this at the last supper where he turned wine into blood.

“Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

Matthew 26:17-30 (NIV)

The progression from water to wine, and now wine to blood, is no coincidence. The first miracle pointed to the last, and that is the miracle of the new covenant. The significance of Jesus’ blood is that it accomplishes two things when it is shed on the cross.

The first is the forgiveness of sins. Like in the Old Covenant, innocent blood had to be shed by the sacrifice of animals. The once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus brings forgiveness of sins to every person for all past, present, and future sins.

The second is the indwelling of God’s Spirit in every person who believes in Jesus as Lord and Saviour. When Jesus died on the cross, the temple curtain was torn in two, signifying that God would no longer dwell there. Instead, He dwells within His people through His Spirit.

Together, the blood of Jesus washes us clean—from the inside out—making us holy so that the Spirit of God can enter in and make His dwelling in us. This is the new covenant and why we drink the ‘wine’ in communion.

Each time we drink the wine, we remind ourselves of Jesus's once-for-all sacrifice for us. Our sins have been eternally dealt with, so we can draw near to God at any time with sincerity and confidence.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
