SUNDAY MESSAGE SUMMARY
Family on Mission - Our City. Our Responsibility.
Hengki Widjaja
In Jeremiah 29:7, we are called to seek the peace and prosperity of the city. The word used is shalom—a deep sense of wholeness, peace, and flourishing. When the city experiences shalom, we experience it too.
But seeking shalom is not passive. It requires intentional, active effort. That is why I believe we need to be mobilised—not outsourcing mission to others, but taking responsibility ourselves. This begins with personal conviction. Over many years of leadership, I have seen that people only act when they are personally convicted, and that conviction must be grounded in Scripture.
This calling is not about us being special or “anointed.” It is about serving others—bringing good news to the poor, healing the brokenhearted, and restoring what is broken in our city.
Ruth and Lifeline
Ruth shared about her work with Lifeline, where she serves as a crisis supporter answering calls from people in distress. More than one million Australians reach out each year, with calls coming in every 29 seconds. While many associate Lifeline with suicide prevention, the work is broader, addressing crisis, loneliness, and emotional pain.
Ruth emphasised that loneliness is a significant and often hidden issue, with many people feeling ashamed to admit it. Her role is primarily to listen—creating space for people to share and helping them find their own sense of empowerment.
Her journey into this work was not driven purely by passion, but by obedience. She felt challenged to give not only financially, but also her time. Using the gifts she already had, she stepped into serving others in a practical way.
Hamilton and Susan – Fresh Start Mission
Hamilton and Susan shared about their work with Fresh Start Mission, supporting people experiencing homelessness and hardship. Hamilton explained that this was not something he originally felt drawn to, but he followed a clear vision that led to the creation of the ministry.
Their work provides practical support such as meals, showers, clothing, and washing facilities. However, they emphasised that the deeper need is often connection. Many people who come are not only struggling materially but are also dealing with loneliness and isolation.
They acknowledged that the work can be challenging and unpredictable, yet it is sustained by a sense of calling. Simple acts—like sharing a meal, offering a conversation, or showing kindness—can make a profound difference in people’s lives.
A Call to Action
Loving our city is not easy, but it is necessary. Each of us has something we can offer—whether through our gifts, our time, or simply our willingness to care.
This is about personal conviction and collective action. Together, we can seek the shalom of our city—its peace, its restoration, and its flourishing.
And, if you would like to journey together with your cell and our church in term of your passions, please fill in Love Our City form.
