SUNDAY MESSAGE SUMMARY
40 Days In Christ - Day 40
Adrian Thornton
Well, here we are—day 40. We’ve reached the end of our 40 Days In Christ journey of prayer and fasting. It’s been a stretching, challenging, encouraging, and for many, deeply transformative experience. For some, there have been testimonies, and for others, there have been trials.
But here’s the good news.
Either way, God has been at work.
Throughout Scripture, the number 40 is a significant marker, representing a season in which God does deep work that leads to new beginnings. As we close these 40 days together, I want to look briefly at three moments in the Bible that help us understand what God may be doing in us right now.
1. Noah: After 40 Days, New Life Begins
When Noah entered the ark, the rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights. Though this wasn’t a fast, it was a time of cleansing and reset. When the rain finally stopped, the waters began to recede, and eventually new life emerged.
For Noah, the 40 days signalled the end of an old world and the beginning of a new one.
I sense God has done something similar among us. Over these 40 days, He has been washing away old patterns, hurts, and sin. And now—just as the flood receded—new life is beginning to sprout in our church and in our hearts.
2. Moses: After 40 Days, A Word From God
When Moses went up Mount Sinai, he spent 40 days in the presence of God. It was there that God spoke to him, giving the Ten Commandments and the foundations for His covenant people. Moses came down the mountain on day 41 carrying the word of the Lord.
I’m believing the same for us. Over the past 40 days, many of us have been seeking God more intentionally than ever, listening, waiting, and asking. I know that God has been speaking to me about our church and our future, and I believe He has spoken to many of you as well.
As we step into “day 41,” some of you will carry a fresh word, a fresh direction, a fresh sense of calling.
3. Jesus: After 40 Days, Power From the Spirit
Before beginning His public ministry, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert, where He fasted for 40 days and was tempted by the enemy. But when He came out, Luke 4:14 says, “Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit.”
That is my prayer for us, that these 40 days will result in greater spiritual strength and a deeper anointing in our everyday lives. That we will go into our homes, workplaces, and relationships in the power of the Spirit, carrying the life of Christ wherever we go.
What Comes After Day 40?
The message of Scripture is consistent. 40 days are never the end—they are always the preparation.
Noah stepped into a new world.
Moses stepped down the mountain with God’s word
Jesus stepped out in the power of the Spirit.
So, as we reach the end of our 40 days, don’t think of this as finishing something. Think of it as stepping into something.
Yes, we can stop fasting (praise God!).
But we do not stop seeking Him.
Tomorrow is Day 41, and it matters just as much as the first 40. Paul says in Colossians 2:6–7, “Continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith.”
That’s the call: We began in Christ. We walk in Christ. And we continue in Christ.
So let’s carry this forward. Let’s remain rooted. Let’s stay expectant. Let’s live as people who are “in Christ,” because that is where real life, real freedom, and real transformation are found.
