SUNDAY MESSAGE SUMMARY
Walking with God (Part 3): The Calling of James and John
Colin Green
Walking with God isn't just about those moments we set aside for prayer or reading the Bible. It's a continuous journey, moment by moment, hour by hour. It’s about recognising that God wants to be involved in our daily lives, whether we're at work, at home, or out and about.
In Matthew 4, we see Jesus calling His first disciples while they’re engaged in their everyday work—fishing. For James and John, they were preparing nets in a boat with their father, Zebedee.
We often think that God’s call comes in grand moments or during significant spiritual events, but here we see that it can happen in the most mundane of circumstances.
When Jesus calls James and John, they immediately leave their father and their livelihood to follow Jesus. This can be a tough pill to swallow because it highlights the reality of following Christ.
Sometimes, following Jesus will disappoint those closest to us, and that’s a hard truth to accept. However, we must prioritise our relationship with Him over the expectations of others.
Living for an audience of one can be challenging, but it’s essential for our spiritual growth.
I encourage you to remain open to those divine moments throughout your day. God is calling you in your everyday life, and the question is: are you ready to respond?
It might mean stepping out of your comfort zone or being willing to be inconvenienced. It’s in those moments of inconvenience that God often speaks to us the loudest. As you go about your day, be mindful of how God is moving in your life.
Let’s walk with Him, not just on Sundays, but every moment of every day. Embrace the journey and allow Him to transform you into the person you’re meant to be. Remember, every moment is an opportunity to deepen your relationship with God and to reflect His love to those around you.

Questions:
If Jesus wants to walk with you moment by moment, what helps you stay attentive, available, and ready to respond to His call?
When have you had to disappoint people in order to put your faith first rather than meet others’ expectations?
Looking at your life right now, where do you sense the need to be more interruptible or open to holy inconveniences?
